BCYS FURY TRAVEL TEAMS: SPRING 2017 SEASON
Parents: Please review the important information below.
Team: FURY U11, U12, U14
Coaches: JOHN SHELDON (phone 251 533 6031)
Communications: I (we) will be communicating mainly through email and Group-Me text messages. Please take a moment to give the coach your best email address and text enabled cell phone number, so you know BCYS received them. We use the emails and cell phone numbers that were provided when you registered so if you wish to add another email address or cell phone number, you can update your profile on the BCYS FURY website (www.BCYSFURY.com - "Edit My Account"). If you are not sure which email address or cell phone number you have given us please send an email to [email protected] and request it.
Practices and Games: Practices will be on Monday, Tuesday AND Thursdays from (5:00 to 6:00 pm for U11), (6:00 to 7:00 pm for U12), (7:00 to 8:00pm for U14) at our locations. Players are expected to attend all practices if possible. Amount of playing time in games is based, in-part on attendance and improvement at practices. Our games are typically on Saturdays or Sundays. Home games and practices will be at Rec Center field. We don't have the game schedule yet but will send it out as soon as it is available. The season is expected to start January 9th with games beginning in mid February. Please arrive at least 45 minutes before game time for warm-ups, check-in, and final line adjustments. Since we are playing in the state league this season any players arriving after referee check-in will not be allowed to participate. Please notify us if you will not be at a practice or game so we can plan accordingly! There is a link on our Team Page on the BCYS website to the travel game schedule.
Bad Weather: For practices and games if there is rain or bad weather, please check Group-Me text or email or go to the BCYS web page www.BCYSFURY.com for field status. Away game cancellations will be determined by the home team. We will send a text or email if we receive notification an away game is cancelled. We DO play and practice in the rain provided conditions are safe for our players! Please note that some opponent’s fields may be closed depending on conditions.
Uniforms: As a travel team you will need to purchase 3 travel Jerseys, 1 pair of shorts and socks. Uniforms sales info will be posted on the website or relayed by the coach. If you have the uniform for BCYS FURY from Fall 2016 season, you will not need to purchase a new uniform. Players must have the complete uniform with red soccer socks. More information is available from your team coach.
All players are to wear the Navy practice jersey to every practice, some parents may wish to purchase 2 navy jerseys rather than washing between practices. We will warm up before each game in the Navy jersey and red shorts and socks. The game jersey color, either red or white, will be determined at game time so both colors need to be brought to every game.
Equipment (games and practices)
- NO EARINGS, Jewelry or casts may be worn during games and practices. There are NO exceptions for medical or religious items.
- Shin guards: Players must wear shin guards, and their socks need to cover the shin guards.
- Cleats: No toe cleats are allowed (single cleat on toe, found on baseball cleats), use soccer cleats.
- Balls: Please bring a ball to practice. (U11 and U12 size #4, U14 size #5) Each player needs a ball, every time, to take full advantage of practice and warm up times. If your player doesn’t bring a ball to practice they will not be able to participate in parts of the practice.
- Water: Players should bring water to practices and games.
- Bug spray and sun screen: Please wear bug spray or sun screen, if needed, to practices and games
U11 Rules: In U11, there is NO intentional heading of the ball. Offside rule is introduced. The game is a 9v9 format with 30 min halves.
U12 Rules: In U12, penalty kicks and the Offside rule is fully enforced. The game is a 9v9 format with 30 min halves. There is a very good document on the BCYS FURY website on the Offside rule (see Parent Resources tab).
Team Assignments: Last season there was some concern about playing time. In an effort to address this, I have decided to split the team into 3 groups, U11, U12 and U14. Children will play in their respective age group first, with the possibility of playing up to the older age group as needed. This will allow more playing time for younger players.
Spectator and Player Responsibilities: There are certain points we'd like to stress:
- Players and spectators are asked to clean up any trash before leaving the fields
- Please keep pets on leashes and away from the sidelines. You may know that your pet is very friendly but many children are afraid of animals and pets on the sidelines can be a distraction.
- Parents are not allowed behind the nets during a game and must remain on the sideline opposite the team
- Please do not coach your player or anyone else from the sidelines.
- Parents and players under no circumstance may yell or jeer at a referee.
- If a referee asks you to change anything about your equipment or uniform please do so as it is for your own and everyone else's safety
Important Guidelines for Parents:
There is a pretty unanimous opinion among coaching experts that parents yelling advice to their kids during games inhibits the learning experience of the child. Cheer loudly; however please limit your cheering, to positive support for the team. Please do not coach your child or anyone else from the sidelines.
Please don’t criticize or yell at the referees. Refereeing is a very hard job, and they are usually excellent. Occasionally they will make bad calls, but rarely will a bad call have an effect on the game, and generally they balance out. Many of the referees are children themselves. It can be detrimental to their development (and downright scary) to be yelled at by adults. Our job is to serve as role models for the players and show composure and class whether the calls go our way or not. In the unlikely event that there are real issues with the referees the coaches will take care of them in the appropriate manner.
If you have any questions please feel free to give me a call or send me an email. Please find the roster below.
See you on the pitch!
Coach Sheldon
